Cabbage Healthy Food Guide

Cabbage is a versatile and delicious vegetable.  Cabbage can be used for salads, sandwiches or other dishes.  You can also cook them in different ways.  Boiling will strip cabbage of its phytonutrients so it is better to sauté, steam or roast cabbage to get the most of its nutrients.

Aside from phytonutrients, it is also rich in Vitamin C and fiber.  Cabbages are also packed with isothiocyanates that helps amp the body‘s natural detoxification systems.  Some studies suggest that cabbage may help fight breast, lung, colon and other types of cancer.

When you shop, choose the right cabbages for the recipe.  Hard white or green and red cabbages are great for making coleslaws or cooked in soups, stews or for sautés.  Napa cabbage has a milder flavor and is great for cooking Asian dishes.  Savoy cabbage is great for cabbage rolls or for roasting.

The next time you purchase cabbage, use it to make homemade kimchi, roast it with black-bean garlic sauce, make a warm apple and cabbage salad with caraway or sauté cabbages with butter and served with mashed red potatoes for a yummier dish instead of the usual coleslaw with mayonnaise.
