Gym class could be one of the most fun classes a kid could attend in school. Of course, it’s play time! And they always need that something where they could make use of their overflowing energy.
However, gym class is not always fun. For instance, catching a ricochet off a classmate’s skull thrown by the captain is no fun at all. Cuts, concussions, and contusions are no laughing matter. And so is this news.
Experts say between 1997 and 2007, the number of physical education-related injuries in kids jumped 150%. According to data in the journal Pediatrics, 70% of the injuries happened during running, basketball, football, volleyball, soccer or gymnastics.
Are kids simply more hyperactive nowadays? Or is it in the milk and food they take?
Researcher suspect the cause is lack of physical activity, saying if kids aren’t out moving and playing before age 9 or 10, they’ll lack the motor skills they need later on. 52% of the injuries occurred in middle school.
Ah, so the cause of the injuries is actually lack of physical activity earlier in the kids’ childhood. Maybe 9 year olds could have another gym class in their curriculum.
