First things first, what do we know about Constipation? Do we know enough to treat it right? Now, to give you a quick start, let me give you the meaning of constipation, a Registered Nurse’s way.

Constipation, costiveness, or irregularity is a condition of the digestive system in which a person (or animal) experiences hard feces that are difficult to expel. This usually happens because the colon absorbs too much water from the food. If the food moves through the gastro-intestinal tract too slowly, the colon may absorb too much water, resulting in feces that are dry and hard.

With this definition, let’s unravel treatments that are not only safe but are…

When I am around boys, whether they are my close friends, or they are newly met acquaintances, I usually eat the same way as I do even when they are not dining with me. Swear! I don’t cut portions or lower my intake or suppress my appetite — okay, I give in, that is because I really don’t eat a lot so this question does not relate to me.

But to many girls, based on my scrutiny and perfectly keen eyesight, I have observed that they tend to eat less and often would have left-overs on their small plates. Cue the stereotypical scene of a girl chewing on lettuce flecks while…

Who would think that being back-to-school could mean fitter, healthier you? I know buying new backpacks, lunch boxes and hearing beeping school buses excites children, because for them it means new friends, new playmates. How about for adults, for mommies and daddies? These are the things that mark the end of long, lazy summer days, and a return to that more structured routine of waking up early to prepare food for the young, helping them do their homework every night, and early bedtimes.

While many of us are busier in the fall with scheduled activities than we are in the summer months, there are ways to use the return of a…

Have you ever heard of the word Orthorexia? As far as I can remember I have only heard of two eating disorders – Anorexia and Bulimia. And it’s so intriguing to know that there is another term that adds to this famous eating disorders list – Orthorexia. It is not yet an official medical diagnosis, and it is not yet listed in the DSM-IV.

Orthorexia or orthorexia nervosa is a term coined in 1997 by Steven Bratman, a Colorado MD, to denote an eating disorder characterized by excessive focus on eating healthy foods. In rare cases, this focus may turn into a fixation or obsession so extreme that it can lead…

Thin, Skinny, Sexy? Up to what degree do you think this ‘super-model body mentality’ overruns the society, especially the young ladies?

Reflect on these model tips on being super skinny for the runway and ask yourself, “Did any of this models’ thoughts resonate with me?”

Originally published in Marie Claire, this is an account of the modelling industry and its culture through the eyes of a former model.

Scornful, fanciful and real, here are some highlights of a former model’s deliberation:

* I was deep into a green-grape diet (three for breakfast, two for snacks, six for binges).
* Last year both a Uruguayan and Brazilian model died of anorexia-related complications, asking the question: have…

Are you fond of buying processed foods that have “Unknown Cholesterol” written on their label? Beware! Just because they are called unknown does not mean they are already safe.  Thank heavens for researchers; some bright light has been shed over this unidentified cholesterol.  We now know how bad they could be.

A research presented at the National Meeting of the American Chemical Society, showed hamsters fed a diet high in this hidden cholesterol had 22% more cholesterol in their blood, causing atherosclerotic plaque buildup.

Instead, experts recommend consuming phytosterols and phytostanols–nutrients found in plant foods–to reduce blood cholesterol.

So you see, it is not only hamburgers and steak that have “bad cholesterol;”  it…
